If you haven’t heard yet, ColdFusion is dead or dying or whatever some ridiculous blogger feels like saying at the time… but I guess other web programming languages are facing the same "problem".

Here is an article that I ran across that ponders the future of PHP, the most widely used web programming language.  Will PHP eventually decline in popularity as ColdFusion has?  Maybe.  It could face pressure from other languages that seem to be gaining popularity, such as ruby and python.

In my opinion, Im not overly concerned with a language dying.  Why?  Because I know that I can always learn, no matter what language is popular or in demand.  I’ll admit, I was AND still am a PHP web developer.  I started using PHP when I was younger because it was free and there were a lot of resources and tutorials that helped me learn the language.  I enjoy working with PHP when I get the chance, and will continue to use it.  I have found the CakePHP framework to be very powerful and similar to RoR, which I really like.  This doesn’t mean I will stop programming in ColdFusion either.  I think that developers need to have a diverse set of tools and knowledge to get the job done.

Like my neighbor always said, "You gotta have the right tool for the job".  So, as a web developer I choose the best approach and tool to accomplish the task at hand.  If that means I use ColdFusion, PHP, RoR, python, perl, ___ (fill in the blank with your favorite web programming flavor) thats just fine by me.

So if ColdFusion dying?  I don’t know.  I do know that I will continue to expand my knowledge of CF and use it.  Adobe seems to be committed to CF, so it is probably here to stay.  After all, it pays the bills =)
